Smart Services Innovations

The Smart Services CRC is a $120m, commercially focused collaborative research initiative, developing innovation, foresight and productivity improvements for the services sector.

Below is a selection of our work ranging from solutions in mobile, video, surface computing, services management, immersive collaboration, training in virtual environments, serious games, foresight, broadband and social media.

The CRC drives engagement between academics, government and industry and seeks to broaden this engagement further by welcoming new partners to the CRC to collaborate on research, development and commercialisation opportunities.

	Michael Harvey, The Australian Museum "Dangerous Australians" An iPhone application that leverages existing content from the Australian Museum in order to provide new channels of interaction with the public, attract new visitors to the Museum and create new revenue streams.
	Dr Ross Brown, Queensland University of Technology "Training in Virtual Worlds" Virtual Worlds have the potential to offer greener, cheaper, faster, more consistent occupational training than legacy training in the real world. This demo based on a healthcare scenario illustrates how the combination of Virtual Worlds and Business Process Management tools helps teachers deliver flexible lesson plans into virtual worlds.
	Dr Dian Tjondronegoro, Queensland University of Technology "Optimising Interactive Mobile Video Experience" New compression and automated video summarisation techniques that shorten existing videos for mobile consumption while retaining the most important content and a quality experience.
	Keith Duddy, Queensland University of Technology "Service Broker & USDL" A repository of service descriptions written in the Unified Service Description Language (USDL) that leverages an organisation’s existing IT assets repository in order to deliver a globally coherent picture of services on offer across the organisation.
	Professor Judy Kay, The University of Sydney "Tabletop & Surface Computing" Surface Computing is getting closer to mainstream acceptance every day. This demo showcases a number of innovative new ways in which users can natively interact with surface-based applications for collaboration, learning, entertainment and planning in different services industries.
	Dheeraj Chowdhury, Assistant Director Learning Applications and Multimedia, NSW Department of Education, Centre for Learning Innovation "Tag!t in Teaching and Learning" An example of how Tag!t technology was applied for students to annotate and interact with video content and teachers to create more engaging training material and better analyse student behavior and feedback.
	Professor Farzad Safaei, University of Wollongong "iSee" iSee brings together the best of Virtual Worlds and videoconferencing for a high-quality situated online collaboration experience. The video stream captured by the webcam of each participant is rendered in a Virtual World that also features spatial sound for a total immersive collaboration experience.
